How to care for a candle vessel after the final burn

How to clean, reuse, and keep your candle vessel in circulation after the wax is gone.

A good vessel should stay useful after the final burn.

At Abera & Co, our candles are poured into handmade vessels because we believe an object should not disappear once its first purpose is finished. The flame may be gone, but the piece can stay in your home as a small holder, a quiet detail, or part of your daily ritual.

Here is a simple way to clean your candle vessel and keep it in circulation.

1. Let the vessel cool completely

Before doing anything, make sure the candle has fully cooled. The vessel, wax, and wick base can stay warm for longer than expected.

Do not pour boiling water into the vessel immediately after burning, and do not scrape aggressively while the wax is still hot. A little patience protects both your hands and the piece itself.

2. Soften the remaining wax

If there is a thin layer of wax left at the bottom, warm it gently.

You can place the vessel in a bowl of warm water for a few minutes, keeping the water level below the rim so no water gets inside. This helps soften the wax without shocking the material.

Once the wax has loosened, use a spoon or a soft cloth to remove it carefully. Avoid sharp tools, as they can scratch or damage the inside of the vessel.

3. Remove the wick base

When the wax is out, you may see the small metal wick tab at the bottom. Gently lift it away.

If it does not come loose right away, warm the base again slightly and try once more. There is no need to force it.

4. Wipe the inside clean

Use a soft cloth or paper towel to wipe away any remaining wax. Then clean the vessel with mild soap and warm water.

Rinse gently and dry it fully before reusing it. Make sure no moisture stays inside, especially if you plan to use it for matches, jewellery, cotton pads, or other small objects.

5. Give it a second life

Once clean, your vessel is ready to become part of your home again.

Use it for tea lights, matches, keys, rings, hair pins, dried flowers, or small desk objects. Place it on a bedside table, bathroom shelf, entryway console, or beside your favourite reading chair.

The beauty of a handmade piece is that it does not need to have only one use. It can move with you through different rooms, seasons, and rituals.

A small note on reuse

Because each Abera & Co vessel is handmade, small variations in shape, texture, and finish are part of the piece. Treat it gently, clean it slowly, and let it age naturally.

The candle may have finished, but the vessel was made to stay.
